It take a while to get
there, but the walk in from the beach is half of the fun. Tall grass parts step
by step, and the smell of the trees mixes with salty ocean air in a way that is
truly unique. Passing into the wood line, the trail turns from rutted gravel to
paved trail, and right in that moment, you can feel the history of your
surroundings draw you into a cold, sometimes eerie embrace. Though no true
battles happened here, the once highly active military installation was once
considered a necessity of national security for our home area, and housed
thousands of personnel, who serviced and fired huge artillery pieces, dedicated
to the protection of the Pacific Northwest. With all of this former activity,
it’s really no wonder that sometimes as you walk through dark hallways, the
smell of sulfur can cause your hair to stand on end, or the sound of a distant
voice causes you to wonder how alone you really are. It’s all these things I
love about this place, the sights, the sounds, the history.
